The Truth About Cats and Dogs

"In reality, 24 Paws is not actually run by 5 Cats and 1 Dog, however, there's nothing stopping us from saying it is."

In the late 1990s and early 2000nds, Cape Breton Island was on the verge of becoming a minor mover and shaker in the phenomenon known as "Hollywood North."  A number of big budget productions, a CBC television show and countless indy films chose Cape Breton as the place to shoot some or all of their productions.  The unique scenery and eager workforce were, in some cases, a natural fit for these particular projects. Unfortunately, those days have gone the way of the coal mines and steel plants, though many folks on the island would gladly welcome them back.

Since the emergence of digital film into the world of filmmaking, many people have been able to afford to make films for a fraction of the cost it once was.  This has enabled sub-cultures of film hobbyists and casual film professionals to hone thier craft without spending an arm and a leg on equipment, post production costs and numerous other expenses that come with working in the medium of film.

Cape Breton Island has a vast talent pool of individuals who are both interested in filmmaking and are experienced in related areas.  This has been most apparent by the formation and subsequent success of the Cape Breton Filmmakers Association and a number of other locals working in film and video production.

In order to master one's craft, he or she must practice it as much as possible.  This is where 24 Paws comes in.  The actual role of 24 Paws is to engage interested individuals in producing short films and working on film projects.  The goal is not necessary to create an Oscar winner or to make a ton of money (thought either would certainly be very nice) but rather to simply go through the whole process of pre to post production on small low budget short films.

To date very few of the individuals working on our productions have either "formal" training or "professional experience" in movie making.  This is not seen as a problem as we are all learning as we go and certainly enjoying the ride.  24 Paws is very much like a community theater troupe and/or a group of new musicians jamming around a campfire.  With each new project comes some success, some failure and a lot of fun.
